To which extent is the French language enriched by "on"? It seems to me that Zola's writing style is almost inconceivable without this impersonal but still participatory pronoun. Probably this is the case with any French writer. I mean, I was quite a bit surprised at finding how clearer English sentences sound compared to French ones. This might be comparable to the rich ambiguity of French music and the quasi-Germanic articulatedness of English music. Debussy and Elgar.
