To say the least, I was "shocked" by what I saw and heard in this shopping mall. "Horrified" might sound too strong, but to be honest it's still inadequate to explain that bizarre disappointment and deep anxiety. There was nothing I heartily appreciate and almost everything was simply mean and vulgar. Yet, I have to admit that I was also struck by some weird uncanniness, as if I already saw this kind of space many times. Yes, I think I had experienced quite identical moods in Japan. Then I surprised at discovering many similarities and parallels between this shopping mall and one which would be found in any rural city in Japan. Would you say that this is because both spaces are being dominated by the logic of capitalism? I would rather say that this is a product of suburbanization which has made our life hollow and empty, cultureless and historyless.
