I was in Fashion Island. When a family (parents and two kids, I guess) passed by me, a younger kid held up something like a gift card to me. For a moment I hesitated. But he kept the left hand raised, saying nothing. He had a few more cards in the right hand. So, I finally took it and said "thank you" and he quickly left with his family, who didn't seem to notice what their kid did. I didn't look back. It was a Starbucks gift card. What was his intention? Probably he passed me what he just got from someone, not knowing what these cards were. Or, it might be that he pitied me that I was walking alone and wanted to make me happy by giving me a Christmas present. Really strange.
ファッション・アイランドにいた。両親と二人の子どもがそばをとおりすぎたとき、下の子がギフトカードのように見えるものを自分の方に差し出した。すこしのあいだ、躊躇した。しかしその子は左手を上げたまま、何も言わない。右手にはいくつかのギフトカードが握られていた。だからそれを受け取ることにして、「Thank you」と言うと、彼は家族とともに足早に立ち去った。家族は、この子がしていたことに気がついていないらしかった。振り返らないことにした。スタバのギフトカードだった。どういうことなのだろう。さっき誰かからもらったものを、それが何なのかもわからないまま、自分にパスしたのかもしれない。または、もしかすると、ひとりで歩いているわたしのことを憐れんでくれたのかもしれない。クリスマスプレゼントを上げて、ハッピーにしてあげたいということだったのかもしれない。なんとも不思議なことだった。
