Perhaps for the first time I'm really enjoying reading Freud. But the more I read Die Traumdeutung, sometimes consulting the original, the deeper my suspicion becomes that The Interpretation of Dreams is a mistranslation. My German is very elementary and I don't claim that I know how the term Deutung is being used, but my sense is that Freud is trying to make sense of what has been considered as non-sensical, which is very different from interpretation that presupposes the meaningfulness of the text...
