"The concrete is concrete because it is the concentration of many determinations, hence unity of the diverse. It appears in the process of thinking, therefore, as a process of concentration, as a result, not as a point of departure, even though it is the point of departure in reality and hence also the point of departure for observation [Anschauung] and conception [Vorstellung]...In this way Hegel fell into the illusion of conceiving the real [das Reale] as the product of thought concentrating itself, probing its own depths, and unfolding itself out of itself, by itself, whereas the method of rising from the abstract to the concrete is only the way in which thought appropriates the concrete, reproduces it as the concrete in the mind [als ein geistig Konkretes zu reproduzieren]." 「具体的なものが具体的であるのは、それが多なる決定の凝縮物だから、すなわち、多様なものを一つにまとめたものだからである。したがって、具体的なものは、思考過程のなかで、凝縮のプロセスとして、出発点としてではなく終着点として、出現するのである。具体的なものは、現実における出発点であり、すなわち、観察と表象のための出発点でもあるのではあるのだけれども . . . ヘーゲルは、現にあるものを、思考が自らを凝縮させた産物であると見なすという幻想に陥り、思考それ自体の深みを測量し、思考それ自体を展開してしまったのだが、抽象的なものから始めて具体的なものへと昇っていく方法こそ、思考が具体的なものをその身の内に取り込み、精神のレベルにおいて具体的なものを再構築する唯一のやり方にほかならないのである。」（マルクス『経済学批判要綱』）
つまり、現実の生の具体性を、既成概念やステレオタイプに回収したり還元したりしないためには、抽象的に考えなければいけない、ということだ。わたしたちが現実を見るときに知らず知らずのうちにかけている色眼鏡をまず解体しなければ、現実そのものを見ることなどできるはずがない、ということだ。
